On Our Own Terms: Bill Moyers Special on PBS tonight
If you watched the first segment of the Bill Moyers special, On Our Own Terms, last night, I'm sure you were as moved as I was with the courageous final journey of Dr. Bill Bartholome and the support of his wife, Pam.
Sunday's segment was so well done that I wanted to remind you that the series will continue for the next three nights on PBS. In Chicago the series is presented on WTTW, Channel 11 from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM Monday through Wednesday. In other locations, check your local listings.
Advance Directives
One of the important topics covered was the importance of having advance directives in place to make sure that medical care is provided (or not provided) in the way you want it to be. The Five Wishes form, developed by Aging with Dignity, was mentioned briefly on Sunday's program. Five Wishes is a living will which speaks to people in their own language, not in 'doctor speak' or 'lawyer speak' and includes not only medical wishes but also the personal, emotional, and spiritual wishes of the seriously ill person.
