Re: Grave Matter, January 5, 2000
The lead article in the Your Money section of today's Chicago Tribune is entitled "Grave Matter, Arranging a funeral is a serious problem for many consumers."
Writer Susan P. Fargo states that half the population has never made funeral arrangements and another 25% has only made them once in their lives. This inexperience, time constraints, and emotional expense can lead to 'gross overspending,' says Fargo. The best way to avoid this is to shop for a funeral home before you need one. Fargo goes on to give a number of good suggestions on how to be a wise consumer when it comes to funeral decisions.
A side article on page 3, "Funeral costs just keep going up," contains price information from a random survey in the Chicago area. The vast differences in costs for each item emphasize the wisdom of doing your homework ahead of time.
