Taking Care of Yourself while Grieving
The process of grieving a loss in ones life can have as many physical manifestations as emotional ones.
Common physical symptoms include fatigue, appetite changes, lowered resistance
to disease, and sleep disturbances.
It is important for those who are grieving, and for their family and friends, to realize that physical reactions are normal and natural.
Following is a list of suggestions to prevent or treat some of the physical
reactions to grief:
- Watch for significant weight loss or gain; consult a physician if this occurs.
- Avoid junk foods and alcohol. Otherwise, purchase them in small quantities.
- Attempt to eat a nutritious balance of foods.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
- Exercise for at least 25 minutes every other day, since exercise
increases energy levels. Before beginning an exercise program, consult with
your physician.
- Ask for help in completing daily tasks; many friends will offer assistance but may not know exactly what to do.
- Schedule a physical exam with your doctor to monitor your physical condition.
- Remember that these physical reactions are not permanent and will ease
as the grieving process continues.
